As we return to school after the Holiday Break we want to remind everyone that monitoring for COVID like symptoms is very important. Students need to assess their health each day before attending school. If they are not feeling well or have a fever, it is recommended that they stay home and do not attend. They will need to monitor their symptoms. Students must be fever free for 24 hours to return to school. Symptoms of COVID-19 are - fever above 100 degrees, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. The use of a mask is still a choice of the family whether a student wears a mask during the school day. Masks are still required on buses when students are riding the school bus. The Wolf Creek Board of Education will have an opening for a board member beginning January 2022. Any resident may submit a letter of interest to Rachel Miller, District Treasurer. Letters of interest may be dropped off at Waterford High School during school hours or mailed to Waterford High School, Attn. Rachel Miller, P.O. Box 67, Waterford, Ohio 45786. Letters of interest will be accepted through December 31st, 2021.

In early September I announced that Wolf Creek Local School would mandate masks for all students and staff. We also stated we would reevaluate and update throughout the mask mandate. The purpose of this was to keep exposed students in school rather than quarentining them for 2 weeks. There are two ways we can keep exposed students in school if they are exposed to a positive COVID case. If a student is exposed to a positive case and is vaccinated they can remain in school if they wear a mask and monitor for symptoms. If a student is exposed to a positive case and was wearing a mask at the time of exposure they can remain in school and monitor for symptoms. The goal is to keep students and staff in school and our schools open to in person learning. For the past 2 weeks we have had low numbers of students and staff testing positive for COVID. In addition, we have only had to quarantine a low number of students as a result of contact outside of the classroom. Beginning, Thursday, October14th we will return to staff and students/parents can choose whether they wear masks while at school. Students riding school buses are still required to wear a mask on the bus. We will continue to monitor the COVID situation and in the event the number begins to trend upward again we may mandate masks. We are asking parents to continue to screen their children for symptoms before sending them to school. Staff members and students need to assess their health each day before attending school. On September 2nd I announced that Wolf Creek Local Schools would mandate masks for all students and staff. In addition, we said we would reevaluate this in two weeks. I want to update everyone on the progress since masking started. On September 2nd, we had approximately 15 staff out with either symptoms or positive test results. There were also 5 positive students, numerous students with symptoms and nearly 60 students quarantined as a result of positive cases. Since the mask mandate was put in place, the community spread has exploded. The wearing of Masks has helped us stabilize and begin to show a trend of the number of students who we need to quarantine. It is hoped that the trend of quarantines and positives will continue to decrease. At the current time, we will continue to Require Masks of all staff, students and those who enter our buildings, along with the continued requirement on school buses. It is our ultimate goal to keep school open for in person learning, able to attend and avoid quarantine, while making the school year as normal as possible. The current trend of covid cases does not allow us to meet those goals if we do not make a change. This decision is being made to help reduce the number of students or staff who need to be quarantined as a result of being a close contact. Based on the guidance we have received from the Ohio Department of Health is that a student does not need to be quarantined (if all parties were masked when in close contact with a positive case) unless they are displaying symptoms. Under the guidance we received from the Ohio Department of Health there are only two ways to avoid quarantine, if they are being masked or vaccinated. We are HIghly recommending anyone attending indoor activities wear a mask to help reduce the spread. We continue to follow the cleaning protocols we have followed throughout the pandemic. If the surge of Covid cases continues we will be forced to implement other mitigation measures. The measure of mandating masks will be re-evaluated and we will continue to update the Wolf Creek School Community. If the trend of covid cases and quarantine of staff/students reduces we will then alter our plan for masks. The decision to require masks is not an easy one, however, if the current infectious and quarantine rates continue to grow we may have to change how we deliver instruction.
