Improvements report

In May of 1999 the residents of Wolf Creek Local Schools passed a three (3) year 3.6 mill levy.

This levy is generating approximately $330,000.00 a year. This money was pledged to be used in five (5) basic ways:

  1. Replace and/or repair the district's roofs (several leaks have been patched during recent rains).
  2. Heating, ventilation, plumbing (HVAC) upgrades. Just like your home, district boilers, furnaces, and vents continually need repairs. Modern furnaces are much more efficient than those twenty (20) years ago.
  3. Work toward full compliance on the Aid to Disability (ADA) chair lift.
  4. Renovation of some areas creating space to permit Wolf Creek Local to comply with Senate Bill 55, which mandates increasing the graduation credits in the following areas: English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Business/Technology, and Fine Arts or Foreign Language.
  5. Electrical upgrades focusing on areas such as fire alarms, emergency lighting (life safety).

During the summer of 1999 roof repair in the district began. Murray Sheet Metal from Parkersburg was awarded the low bid for replacing the high school roof with a slanted/tapered insulation from ply roof. This placed a slope to the roof improving drainage.

All roofs at the high school, except the band roof, were completed in this process. The band roof was repaired in 1993. It is hoped that the band roof will last to be replaced with the elementary roof (tentatively planned for the Summer of 2001)

The elementary roof presently has a Duralast roof with a fifteen (15) year warranty. This warranty expires in March of 2001.

The ventilation system for four (4) areas in the basement of the elementary were installed by Miller Heating and Plumbing during the Fall of 1999. This corrected the moisture and odor problem that existed in those areas.

A new heating system was installed, also by Miller Heating and Plumbing, into the classroom area of our Industrial Technology classrooms.

Improvements report(cont)

Fire alarm improvements were begun at the elementary school.

Expectedly by Fall of 2000 is a cost report on the renovation of existing space to make closets, old gymnasium, etc., into classrooms, allowing compliance with Senate Bill # 55.

As you can see from this brief reading, while there is always much to do in the area of maintaining facilities and complying with new mandates from the state, the pledge by the Board on spending of the 3.6 mill levy is in the process of being fulfilled.

Thank you for your support!

Renovations update.

A proposal for the estimated cost of renovation of existing space at both the high school and the elementary is being completed. This estimate is to contain HVAC upgrades as well as electrical improvements. You will recall that the 3 year levy passed last May was to begin addressing these problems. Also, the conversion to gas at the elementary has been placed on hold until the electricity deregulation is fully implemented. The Ohio School Boards Association is implementing a "School Pool" program that could possibly make our electrical rates cheaper than gas. We are in a wait and see mode in this area!

Follow-up to Kids on Campus

As was reported in last month's news our school has received grant money to participate in the countywide Kids on Campus Tutoring Program.

The program is going extremely well. There are nearly 50 students participating in the program. Congratulations to Beth Huck for her success, and a special thanks for her hard work in organizing the program.
